Senate President, Bukola Saraki, alongside fellow senators, Dino Melaye, Ben-Murray Bruce, others arrived the venue of the Ojude-Oba amidst wild jubilation from guests.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the recently decamped senator, Saraki arrived the Oba Sikiru Adetona Golden Jubilee Centre, Ijebu-Ode, venue of the Ojude-Oba, as the special guest of honor for the event.

His entrance erased doubts over his presence having raised controversy in some quarters over his choice for the 2018 edition of the festival.

Upon arrival, Saraki went round the pavilion to acknowledge cheers from the crowd before eventually making his way to the reserved area to pay homage to the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, and other dignitaries.

In spite of the rain, guests were seen in their numbers to savour the occasion, which is majorly sponsored by telecommunications giant, Globacom.

The Ojude-Oba is held yearly two days after Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, as an age-old tradition of Ijebu indigenes in honour of the town’s monarch.

Different age-grade groups, known as the “Regberegbe” were present in different colourful outfits, bearing gifts for the Awujale.

Other side attractions are the mock wars and horse display by various warlord families, as tourists from within and outside the country bask in the allure of the annual event.

We will Declare Saraki, Melaye Seat Vacant – Akpabio Speak Fire

The immediate past Senate Minority leader and former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akpabio, APC, Akwa Ibom North West, Monday vowed that the Senate would declare seats of Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, former PDP national Chairman, Barnabas Gemade, Senators Rabiu Kwankwaso; Dino Melaye; Usman Nafada; Suleiman Hunkuyi and others who dumped the ruling, All Progressives Congress, APC for the Peoples Democratic PDP vacant.

Others are Senators Abdullahi Danbaba;,Mohammed Shaaba Lafiagi; Rafiu Ibrahim; Ida Hamman Misau; Monsurat Sunmonu; Suleiman Nazif and Abdulaziz Nyako.

Answering questions from Journalists Monday in Abuja, Senator Akpabio who last week Wednesday dumped the PDP for the APC, said that he was not disturbed over calls from some quarters that his seat in the upper Chamber should be declared vacant.

Akpabio who was blocked at the Foyer of the National Assembly Monday and asked if he was perturbed about reports that his seat should be declared vacant, said, “Even as you are looking at me, do I look perturbed?

I have not heard the report. Because the reason why I think that is a rumour is that there is, at the moment, no division in the APC. The APC is one family. If you hear about R-APC that was not really a political party that was not a division, and has since been consumed in what they call Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP). So, there is no division.

And so, any defector from APC to PDP, we will like to declare those seats vacant.”

On the question that the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole had said severally that he would get Saraki impeached this week and that Constitution says two-third was required to effect such an impeachment and how he has mobilized for this, Akpabio said, “I just came in from Ikot-Ekpene, where I decided with my people to join APC.

I’m yet to be briefed on any of those items. I have not heard anything. And what I am hearing now is what you are telling me. But why don’t you wait for me to formally talk to you? I believe that when the National Assembly resumes you will hear from me directly. So, exercise patience.”

How Melaye Saved Me From PDP Thugs At National Assembly

Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma

Speaking while addressing journalists in Abuja on Thursday, a member of the house of representatives from Edo state, Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma, accused his colleagues in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of sending thugs to assault him.

According to TheCable, the lawmaker said but for Dino Melaye, and another senator who “protected” him, he would have been attacked inside the National Assembly Complex on Tuesday.

Agbonayinma who was one of the few lawmakers in the All Progressives Congress (APC) that came to the complex during the security siege that lasted for hours, alleged that thugs hired by the PDP accosted him at the entrance of the complex.

He said: “The national assembly belongs to all political parties and Nigerians why must PDP thugs block me from entering the complex?.

“If I had reacted and stormed the place with other APC lawmakers, could they have withstood us? I chose to be a mature Nigerian. I equally want the thugs tried in the same vein with the invaders.

“The DSS also protected me from the rampaging thugs and the question is who brought them there if not the PDP.

“Even when I finally entered the complex PDP lawmakers told me I had no business being there and it was senators Matthew Uroghide and Dino Melaye who protected me.”

The lawmaker called for a probe of the alleged assault, saying: “This can’t happen in the United States as such thugs will be prosecuted. I demand for their prosecution.”

They almost set me ablaze: Dino Melaye on how he spent 11 hours in the wilderness

When news broke that Senator Dino Melaye, representing Kogi West Senatorial District, had been kidnapped, a lot of conspiracy theories quickly took shape.

Both Senator Ben Murray-Bruce, who made the announcement, Thursday morning and the ‘abducted’ senator were hot topic for the day. Many argued that Melaye faked his own kidnap, either to cause unnecessary drama or avoid going to court.

The senator was reportedly kidnapped morning, along the Abuja-Lokoja Highway and his brother, Moses Melaye had informed Mr Ben Bruce.

However, in an interview with Premium Times today,  the senator recounted of how he spent 11 hours in the wilderness after escaping from his assailants. He noted that he wasn’t kidnapped but escaped in order to save his life.

On how it began

Mr Melaye said he was on his way to Lokoja from Abuja for a court appearance on Thursday morning and just a little away from Gwagwalada, a convoy of three vehicles drove recklessly by his vehicle, intercepting him on the highway and forcing him to stop.

Firstly, they tried to open fire to force themselves into the vehicle, but soon realized it wouldn’t work as his vehicle was well-fortified with bullet-proof. As a second resort, he said they tried to set him ablaze.

“They started shouting that they wanted to burn me, they said ‘burn him, burn him down,’ and crossed the road to look for tyres to set the vehicle on fire.”

He said as his assailants were in a frantic search for tyres with which to burn him, he got out of the vehicle and quickly jumped into the bush.

“I jumped into the bush, and I started running. They pursued me and I was able to outmanoeuvre them and climb a tree.

“I was on top of the three when I saw them run past looking frantically for me. When they didn’t find me, they also ran back.”

On his brother

“I was going in a totally different vehicle, but I asked my brother to drive behind me in an SUV as a back-up,” he said. “But I was shocked to see the attackers run into the middle, creating wall between my brother and I before attacking me.”

Dino Melaye’s Guards Shot Police Sergeant. Police Summon Senator (Photos)

The Kogi State Police Command has summoned Senator Dino Melaye to report at the State Criminal and Investigation Department after his armed guards fired on a team of policemen on patrol duties in the state.

A police sergeant was the victim of the shooting, the police said and is recuperating in the hospital.

The Kogi Police Command asked Melaye to report at the SCIID office in the state capital, in the company of his armed guards, as investigation began on the shooting.

the policeman shot by Melaye’s guards recuperating in hospital

According to the police, their statement, signed by DSP William Ovye Aya, the PRO, was partly to refute Melaye’s allegation that he was shot at by the police.

On the contrary, the police said that Melaye’s guards opened fire first, with the police responding.

Dino Melaye, right, commissioning a transformer in Mopa after the encounter with the police

In posts on Instagram, Melaye did not mention any shooting incident. However, he claimed the police tried to block his convoy with a grader, parked on a bridge, while he was on his way to Yagba east to commission some projects. According to him, his convoy avoided the blockade.

In another Instagram post, the senator representing Kogi West said the state government barricaded the road to stop his movement.

It was on Twitter that the senator claimed an attempt was made on his life during the visit to his state.

He claimed over 20 bullets were fired at his jeep by a combination of policemen, men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and the military.

”I thank God for spearing(sic) my life once again. Over 20 bullets holes on my jeep. Combination of police,SARS and military. God I thank you.

The police statement reproduced below contradicted his account:

“Today, at about 1530hours, a team of policemen from the Command was on a routine Anti – Robbery/Kidnapping patrol along Aiyetoro Gbede – Mopa Road.

“During the patrol, and as it is often the practice, the team pinned down at a point at Iyah Gbede Junction, where they were observing the highway and occasionally conducting Stop and Search.

Melaye claims this grader was used to block a bridge to prevent his passage

“It was in this process a long convoy of vehicles coming from Mopa towards Aiyetoro Gbede approached the Point. Officers of the Command at the Point flagged down the convoy. While the lead vehicle, a Toyota Hilux van, which was later discovered to be conveying officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, stopped to introduce themselves, other vehicles in the convoy dangerously zoomed off without regards to the safety of the officers on ground.

“Surprisingly, some plain clothed armed men, occupying a white Toyota Hilux van, without registration number, without provocation fired gunshots at the officers of the Anti-Robbery /Kidnapping Patrol Team.

“One of the officers, a Sergeant, was hit by bullet on the right part of his chest as a result of which he sustained grievous injury.

“The Officer is currently lying critically ill in the hospital where he has undergone a live threatening surgery and currently recuperating.

“Expectedly, the policemen in self defence responded by firing back to repel the unexpected attack. Vehicles in the convoy nevertheless, drove away from the scene. It was not until the officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps were questioned that it was realised that the convoy was that of Senator Dino Melaye.

“It is rather unfortunate that the Senator could after this dastardly act by his aides, be going around with armed men, unknown to the Command who could launch such a lethal attack on police officers in the course of their normal duty.

“It is more saddening that the Senator could turn around to issue misleading statements to cover up the heinous crime committed by his hired aides.

“While, the command has instituted a high powered investigation panel into the incident, Senator Melaye is hereby advised to report with people in his convoy to the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department, Lokoja to assist in the investigation.”
