Dogara: APC, PDP in fresh battle for control of House

•Speaker plots taking 20 APC Reps to rival party
•Ruling party awaits defectors from Benue, Ekiti

The battle for the control of the House of Representatives by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)  is gathering steam following the  expected formal defection  of Speaker Yakubu Dogara  to the opposition party.

Dogara who has ceased to identify publicly with the APC for some time now was, on Thursday, presented with PDP’s nomination form by some of his constituents from Bogoro/Dass/Tafawa Balewa federal constituency in Bauchi State.

The APC remains the majority party in the House with members putting its strength between 181 and 192 and that of the PDP at between 156 and 165.

APGA and ADC have five members each, SDP has two while UPP and Accord have one each while one seat is vacant.

Although  the two chambers of the National Assembly are currently on recess, The Nation gathered that key players in the APC and the PDP are doing everything possible to ensure that their party is in control of the House  till  the end of the eighth session of the NASS.

Sources said about 20 APC Reps who are  loyalists  of the Speaker are willing to switch camps with him once he moves.

The aim is to make the PDP the majority party in the House so that Dogara can retain his position as Speaker.

The APC is nothing relenting either.

Sources said the party is determined to retain its majority in the House and is expecting a sizeable number of  PDP defectors mainly from Ekiti and Benue States.

Sources close to Dogara believe it will be difficult to remove him in view of the sheer number of votes required to do so.

Section 50 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended stipulates that two-thirds or 240 votes in the 360-seat House of Representatives are required to remove the Speaker.

Though, the Leader of the House and of the APC Caucus, Femi Gbajabiamila has maintained silence on the matter, a number of APC lawmakers feel that Dogara should not be sitting on the chair of the Speaker when the House returns from its current recess.

When asked to express his reaction to Dogara’s defection and the next steps being contemplated, Gbajabiamila only sent a terse text message: “No comment for now.”

Lyon’s Dutch forward Memphis Depay had his house burgled during Friday’s Ligue 1 home defeat to Nice with the thieves reportedly getting away with a massive 1.5 million euros haul $1.75m.

Federal House Of Reps Member Defects From PDP To APC

The fortunes of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have swelled in Abia State with the defection of Nkeiru Onyejeocha, Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Aviation, from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to the party.

Also, about six other lawmakers in the House of Representatives and Abia State House of Assembly are discussing with leaders of the APC in Abia State for their possible defection to the party.

Daily Sun gathered that Onyejeocha, representing Isuikwuato/Ummunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State, formally registered for the APC in her ward on Wednesday after being convinced by former governor of the state and chieftain of APC, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, to do so.

Onyejeocha was a local government chairman and commissioner in Abia State during the administration of Kalu. Sources revealed that more lawmakers, at both federal and state levels, may also join the APC in Abia State at the conclusion of discussion with leaders of the party.

It was gathered that the other lawmakers who may defect are from Abia North, the Ukwa area of Abia South and part of Abia Central. In recent times, PDP political bigwigs from the South East have been joining the APC.

Recently, former senators and governorship aspirant in Enugu State, Ayogu Eze, defected to the PDP. Eze, a two-term senator, had engaged in intensive consultation with political associates and stakeholders in Enugu and APC before making up his mind to join the APC.

He registered as a member of the APC in his ward, with a grand reception being planned to formally receive him in the party.

Following Eze’s entry, there have been celebration in Enugu APC as party members see him as a strong force in the state.

What Police Said On The Alleged ‘Sporadic Shooting & Attack’ On Akpabio’s House

The police in Akwa Ibom state said there was no attack on the country home of a senator, Godswill Akpabio, as claimed by the senator’s aide, PREMIUM Times reports.

Akpabio’s media aide, Anietie Ekong, said earlier that some unknown gunmen stormed the senator’s home in Ukana Ikot Ntuen, Essien Udim, Akwa Ibom state, around 7.30 p.m on Tuesday, and were shooting sporadically in front of the gate before they were repelled by police officers and other security personnel attached to the senator.

“That information is false,” the police spokesperson in the state, Odiko MacDon, told PREMIUM Times on Wednesday.

“There was an attempted robbery at a filling station close to Senator Akpabio’s house. The filling station is 200 metres away from the senator’s house.

“Nobody attacked the country home of Senator Godswill Akpabio,” MacDon, a deputy superintendent of police, said.

The divisional police officer (DPO) in Essien Udim corroborated Mr MacDon’s position that the shooting was at a filling station, and not the senator’s house.

“There were some policemen on the ground at the filling station, so when the armed robbers started shooting, the policemen there fired back, and the robbers ran away,” the DPO said.

The DPO said when he learnt of the shooting, he visited the area that night, in the company of the police area commander, adding that he and his officers stopped by the senator’s house that night, and the gate was locked.

“We stayed around there till late into the night before we left,” he said.

When contacted for his earlier comment and the police position on the matter, the senator’s media aide, Ekong, said: “What we know is that there were sporadic gunshots outside the gate of the senator’s house.”

Oyo Govt Denies Knowledge Of Demolition Of Yinka Ayefele’s Music House

Yinka Ayefele

The Oyo State Government on Monday denied demolishing the music house of gospel musician, Yinka Ayefele, in Ibadan.

The state government, through its counsel, Mr Yomi Alliyu, made the denial when he appeared before Justice Iyabo Yerima of the State High Court, Ring Road, Ibadan, on Monday.

Alliyu appeared for the first and second defendants, Gov. Abiola Ajimobi and Mr Bola Abimbola (State Attorney-General), in a case instituted by Ayefele against the defendants.

The counsel said his clients were shocked to read about the reported demolition on Sunday morning.

According to him, the state government is planning to set up a panel of enquiry to find out those responsible for the demolition.

”My clients are men of honour that respect rule of law and constituted authority and will have no reason to demolish the said property,” he told the court.

Alliyu, who had earlier denied that his clients were served with court processes, quickly reversed himself when the judge showed him evidence of actual service on the first and second respondents.

The defence counsel, however, urged the court to adjourn the case pending the time the claimant would be able to file and serve his clients with notice of the ex-parte motion since the court was on vacation.

He said that filing of motion on notice and letter of urgency alone by the claimant was not enough.

But the claimant’s counsel, Mr Olayinka Bolanle, had informed the court that the respondents had gone ahead to demolish the structure in spite of a court’s restraining order

“Even after the defendants had become aware of this proceedings, it is sad and unbelievable my Lord that the defendants in the wee hours of Sunday, Aug 19, went to the property in dispute and demolished it,” he told the court.

The claimant’s counsel urged the court to reiterate its earlier order restraining the defendants from further demolition of the rest of the structure pending the determination of the suit.

Justice Yerima adjourned the case until Sept. 12 for hearing of applications and urged parties to file necessary processes before the adjourned date.

PDP Reacts To Sad Demolition Of Ayefele’s N800 Music House

Yinka Ayefele

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the demolition of a building belonging to musician & broadcaster, Yinka Ayefele, in Ibadan by the Oyo State Government said to worth N800 million.

Reacting in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan on Sunday in Abuja, the party described the demolishing of the building, said to be worth N800 million, as “horrifying, wicked and speaks volume of the insensitivity of the perpetrators”.

It was gathered that Ayefele’s building which housed Flash FM station and recording studio, was said to have been brought down in spite of a court order.

According to PDP, ”Ayefele’s building was demolished for allegedly singing songs considered to be against the interest of the All Progressives Congress (APC), even when our Constitution allows all citizens right to free speech, freedom of opinion and association within the ambit of the law.

“The PDP alerts Nigerians of a dangerous trend whereby the current clampdown on the media is now being extended to other public opinion moulders, including musicians and perhaps actors.”

Ologbondiyan urged all public spirited groups and individuals to condemn what he described as “emerging assault on free citizens for no just cause”.

“Nigerians, must at all times, be free to hold and canvass opinion, politically associate and aspire, as long as their actions are within the ambit of our laws,” he said.

NUJ Reacts To Demolition Of Yinka Ayefele’s N800m Radio House

Following the demolition of Broadcaster, Yinka Ayefele’s N800m Radio house by the Oyo state government, NUJ has reacted.

The demolished radio house

The Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists  on Sunday condemned the demolition of  Yinka Ayefele’s  Music House which houses his  Fresh FM 105.9  radio station.

A statement jointly signed by the council’s  Chairman, Mr Adewunmi Faniran,  and the Secretary, Mr Bola Ogunlayi, said it was highly disturbed that the building was demolished when the matter was before a  court of competent jurisdiction.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the building belonging to the popular musician was demolished at about  4.30 am on Sunday by the state government for allegedly contravening its town planning laws.

The council expressed concern about the fate of the journalists and other media workers in the establishment as well as the loss suffered by the owner of the broadcast outfit.

“As the fourth estate of the realm  and believer  in the rule of law, the Oyo State NUJ expects  that the court would have been left to take a definite decision on the issue of demolition before it was carried out,” it said.

The council called on the state government to ensure that “ it comes to the aid of Fresh FM which has been a pride of Ibadan in particular and Oyo State.’’

It urged the government to relocate the station to another site and ensure the smooth take-off of its operations.

How My Wife Was Caught In Her Lover’s House By His Spouse

A heartbroken man has sought for help after he learnt about his wife being caught with her lover. According to him, his wife was caught in her lover’s house by the man’s spouse.

When he confronted her, she confessed and swore it was the first time. Now, he is confused about what to do with the man.

The man told his story in a letter he wrote to a relatiobship expert on Vanguard.

He wrote: “I remarried over five years ago after my first wife died, leaving me with three children under 10.

“My second wife is a business woman and is the mother my children need. You can therefore appreciate how bewildered I felt when the phone in my office rang and there was this shrill hysterical voice at the other end asking me to warn my wife and keep her in check as she’s just discovered my wife bolting out of her matrimonial home – that her husband has confessed to sleeping with her.

“She got my phone number from the wallet my wife left behind in her flight! I raced to her shop and met her crying. She confessed the man was an ex-boyfriend who’d been pestering her for a date.

“She didn’t want to go with him to a seedy motel that was why she went to his house after being assured the wife was away. I was glad she didn’t insult my intelligence by lying but I don’t know how to handle this nightmare. She swore it was the first time.

“I know she loves me. Why does she want to throw away all we have because of a one-night-stand?”

After reading the man’s letter, the relationship expert gave him the following advice;

“Dear Stephen,

“People do stupid things all of the time and only your wife can explain what she did.

“A good wife and mother would not ordinarily do what she did, but some ex-lovers can be so persuasive that their ‘victims’ just cave in to their demands. Believe your wife when she said it was a one-off and learn to put the experience behind you.

“There are five children to consider here and your wife’s parental skills are still needed by all. It is a painful hurt that would take ages to get over, but your family and home come first.

“The shame of discovery is bound to prevent her from straying again.”

DSS Finally Speaks On Alleged N21b, Weapon, PVCs Found In Daura’s House

File photo

In a statement issued by the Spokesperson of the Department of State Services (DSS), Tony Opuiyo in Abuja on Monday, the nation’s secret police denied the rumours making the round that a huge sum of money and weapons were found in the house of its sacked Director General, Lawal Daura.

The agency said that the rumours emanated from some fake videos which it said were circulated as being the outcome of a search allegedly carried out in the home of Daura, adding that there was no iota of truth in the allegation that N21bn and unspecified number of Permanent Voters Card were found in Daura’s houses.

The spokesman for the agency, Opuiyo, described the videos as fake, which gave an impression that the search was conducted at the residence of the former DG in both Abuja and Daura, Katsina State, adding that there was no search carried out in the home of Daura by any security agency.

Opuiyo said, “The attention of the Department of State Services has been drawn to the circulation of fake information and videos in which several items were said to have been recovered from the Katsina and Abuja homes of its immediate past Director General, Lawal Daura.

“These non-existent items include:N21bn cash, 400 assorted and sophisticated small arms and light weapons/rifles, and thousands of Permanent Voters Card belonging to Niger Republic immigrants.

“In another video also in circulation, some persons believed to be personnel of a security outfit were seen forcing open safes stocked with money. The security operatives were described as executing a recovery operation at the Katsina home of the former DGSS.

“Consequently, the Service wishes to inform the public that these videos are false and should be disregarded. So far, no such recovery operations have been undertaken by the EFCC or any other security agency at DSS’ office or residences of the former DG.

“There is no doubt that different interests have continued to give varied accounts of the incident of last week at the National Assembly.

“It may, however, be recalled that the Presidency had pledged to carry out a detailed investigation regarding the alleged National Assembly siege.”

Opuiyo asked members of the public to exercise restraint in their narration of events and as such, desist from spreading fake news or engaging in activities that he said might mislead or further cause a breach of the peace as well as preempt the outcome of investigations.
